Shona Fernyhough

Job Title:
Veterinary Acupuncture & Pain Care for Animals
Biography:
Dovetree Veterinary Care provides a referral clinical veterinary acupuncture and dedicated pain and wound management service in Totnes and the surrounding area. Most animals tolerate acupuncture very well, and even relax once the needles are placed.

Dr Shona Fernyhough BVM&S MRCVS MSc graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh in 2001. She worked in general mixed practice for 6 years during which time she developed a particular interest in pain management and wound healing in large and small animals. This led her to undertake postgraduate training in veterinary acupuncture with the ABVA (Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists) in 2006. In 2007 Shona left general practice to specialise in a multi-modal approach to pain and wound management, using acupuncture plus specific exercise, diet and lifestyle changes, on a referral basis.

Common conditions cared for by Shona include osteoarthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia, select spinal conditions, muscular strains, postoperative orthopaedic recovery, behavioural issues linked to pain, myofascial pain, palliative care cases, lick granulomas and non-healing wounds.

In the UK acupuncture on animals may only be performed by an appropriately trained veterinary surgeon. Shona also often works with ACPAT(A) certified animal physiotherapists as part of her comprehensive approach to pain and wound management, in order to achieve a maximal treatment benefit for her patients.
Since acupuncture may only be performed by a veterinary surgeon, treatment is covered by many pet insurance policies. Please check your policy to determine your individual circumstance. Shona is happy to process retrospective insurance claims on your behalf.
